David Russell Scrutchfield passed away, surrounded by his wife and daughters, on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, after bravely fighting cancer with all he had for several years.

David was born in Fort Collins, Colorado on July 3rd, 1944 to Leroy and Dora Dean (Burns) Scrutchfield. David spent his early years in Colorado and Missouri, and at the age of nine he moved to the Sheridan area and attended the Wakely School on Lower Prairie Dog. David graduated from Sheridan High School in 1961.

After high school graduation, David worked as a surveyor for powerlines throughout the western United States. He met his wife, Pauline Shockley, in Bend, Oregon, and they were married on June 22, 1968. Their older daughter, Tammy, was born in 1970, and their second daughter, Stephanie, arrived in 1974.

David and Pauline settled in Sheridan, Wyoming in 1974. He became a certified draftsman in 1977 and worked at the mines for a few years, but his real passion was cars. In 1980, he opened his own shop, Performance Specialties, and worked as a mechanic. Later, he went back to drafting, doing computer drafting for various engineering firms in the state of Wyoming. Working on detailed drawings fit his meticulous personality, as David never did any work that wasn’t flawless; he was a perfectionist in everything he did, and he taught his girls that any job worth doing needed to be done well.

David loved his girls (which is how he referred to his wife and daughters), his grandchildren (who called him Pa), his cars (especially his ’51 Chevy), joking with friends and family, reading, his pets, attending First Baptist Church, having coffee with his buddies, talking with his sons-in-law, a good barbecue, fishing, ancient history and local history. David laughed easily and was loved and cherished by his family. There are not enough words available to say how much his three girls and his grandchildren adored him.

David is survived by his wife of 50 years, Pauline; his daughters, Tammy (Jim) Billings and Stephanie (Brian) Hamilton; his five grandchildren, Nolan Billings, Nash Billings, Lauren Hamilton, Kaden Hamilton, and Hailey Hamilton; his stepsister, Sandy Music; his aunt, Mary Hutton, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

David was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Richard, and his beloved aunt, Eyvonne (Burns) Cotton.

A Viewing will be held at 9:00 am prior to the Celebration of Life at 10:00 am on Saturday, December 1, 2018, at the First Baptist Church with Brad Kremensek officiating. Burial will be in the Juniper Heights Section of the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with a Reception to follow at the church.
