Edward Joseph Poll Sr., 98, passed away Friday, July 6th at the Mountain View Living Center at the V.A. Hospital. He was born May 22, 1920 in Sheridan, Wyoming to Joseph J. Poll, Sr. and Catherine M. (Bliskey) Poll.
He served in the Army including WWII, the Korean Conflict and the National Guard for 35 years, finishing with the rank of Command Sergeant Major. He received the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, WWII Victory Medal, European Africa Middle East Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and Denver Post Service Medal.
Ed worked as a Parts Manager at Poll Motor, a salesman for Riley Motors, Auto Electric, Wyoming Automotive, NAPA Auto Parts and after retiring, worked part-time at Champion-Ferries Funeral Home.
Ed spent 24 years umpiring for American Legion Baseball and women’s softball games for the Rec Center. His love in life was working with wood, the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and helping others in the community with building projects. He made numerous signs throughout the community. Ed built alters for the Catholic church throughout Wyoming, Montana and South Dakota. With a majority of his skills shared with Holy Name School and Church.
Ed married Betty Jo (Dierks) Poll, June 21, 1947 in Sheridan where they made their home and had six children.
He was preceded in death by his parents, younger brother, Joe Poll, sister, Helen Minick, his wife, Betty, and sons, Eddie Jr., and Ron and one daughter, Cathy. He is survived by his son, John (Cindy) of Cleveland, Ohio; daughter-in-law, Velda of California; daughters, T.J. Poll of Laramie and Meg Poll- Frost (Grant) of Cheyenne; 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at Holy Name Catholic Church. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Glenn Whewell officiating and military honors. A luncheon will immediately follow in the Parish Hall. Interment to be held in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make Sheridan the best community by volunteering your time.
