SHERIDAN, WY. Gary Small & the Coyote’ Bros have been nominated for “Artist of the Year” and “Best World Music Album” at the 14th annual Native American Music Awards (NAMA). The group secured the nominations for their most recent album, “Hostiles & Renegades”, which has yet again earned the band national attention.
The well-known local group, and Gary Small in particular, is no stranger to the NAMA award process, having been voted “Songwriter of the Year” in 2002, “Rock Album of the Year” in 2007, and “Best Male Artist” in 2011. In addition to these awards, the band’s 6 albums have garnered numerous other nominations including “Best Blues/Jazz Recording” on no less than three separate years.
The band’s style, often described as Carlos Santana meets Bob Marley, has been refined through diligent practice and years of experience, and it clearly pays off. The current band has been recording together since 2005, and before that Gary Small led the Gary Small Band for 15 years in Portland, Oregon. Considering that the Gary Small Band included members such as Graham Lear, former drummer of Santana, and former Joe Cocker percussionist Bobby Torres, it is no surprise that he has assembled an accomplished group of local musicians who have consistently received national acclaim at venues such as the NAMA.
The NAMA was founded in 1998, and has been referred to as “All the professionalism and production values of much larger events like the Grammy Awards and the American Music Awards” by the American Federation of Radio Television Artists. Earning a nomination for the event is highly competitive, with only six artists from across the nation being nominated for each category.
Once the nominations have been announced, it is up to the public to make a decision. Members of the public are encouraged to support Gary Small & the Coyote’ Bros by voting at www.nativeamericanmusicawards.com/votenow.cfm (please note that new visitors may need to complete a brief registration form). Voting only takes a couple minutes, and you will see Gary Small & the Coyote’ Bros listed under categories #2 and #30.
