Sheridan's own Gary Small, along with this band, the Coyote Brothers, have won at the Wyoming Blues and Jazz Society's 3rd Annual International Blues Challenge Competition held this past Sunday in Casper. Small's band includes Jim Willey, Jobe Jennings, and Jimmy Lange. Willey and Jennings are both from Sheridan, Lange is from West Cliff, Colorado. The contest was judged by three from Wyoming and Colorado, and according to a release from Small, the place was packed. He stated bands from across the state perform in the competition.
The win offers the band a chance to compete at the International Blues Challenge, held by the Blues Foundation in Memphis, TN in mid January. This isn't the only award Small has won. In October of 2011, the band won a Nammy, or the Native American equivalent to the Grammy. He said being in Sheridan makes it harder to get recognized nationally...
Small stated the band's latest win can be attributed to taking the "boys to Famous Dave's Ribs, and [making] them eat very hot spicy barbecue sauce".
He adds that they've put in hours and hours of rehearsals, and traveled thousands of miles this summer. "I think we're in great musical shape right now and I think the judges recognized it", he said.
