Gillette's Kalina Smith is the 2016-17 Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year for the state of Wyoming. Smith is the fourth Gatorade Wyoming Volleyball Player of the Year to be chosen from Campbell County High School.
The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Smith as Wyoming’s best high school volleyball player.
Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year award to be announced in January.
The 5-foot-10 senior outside hitter and setter recorded 449 kills, 327 digs and 300 assists this past season, leading the Camels (24-12) to the Class 4A semifinals. Smith also notched 58 service aces and 42 blocks. Selected Class 4A Player of the Year by the Wyoming Coaches Association, she is a four-time First Team All-State honoree. Smith has maintained a 3.46 GPA in the classroom. She remains undecided upon a collegiate destination.
As a Gatorade Player of the Year, Smith will be able to select a national or local youth sports organization to receive a grant as part of the Gatorade Play It Forward program.
